Will E-Procurement and Mill-Direct Programs Replace Oilfield Supply Reps?

By Amanda Leon, founder of OilMoney.io. Houston-raised, came up in the Houston marketing team of Vallourec, and has run Unrth, a brand and growth studio for oil and gas and industrial companies, since 2017, with her boots on client locations in Midland and Odessa. Last reviewed October 21, 2026.

A supplier portal takes the purchase order and tracks the payment once a supplier is set up, and a mill-direct program can store, inspect, and deliver pipe to the rig. Neither one writes the spec, sets the shortlist, or decides whether something new is worth a trial. People still make those calls, and that's where a supply rep still earns the sale.

I studied neuromarketing, and the lesson that stuck is that what people tell you they want and what they actually want are often two different things. That's the heart of Predictably Irrational, the 2008 book by Dan Ariely: we're irrational, and a lot of the time we can't tell what we want, much less put it into words. A catalog is built for the opposite buyer, the one who already knows the part number. He types it in, picks a quantity, and he's done. The engineer who is still describing a problem can't search for an answer he can't name yet. He needs someone who has heard that problem before, and no portal is going to have that conversation for you.

ConocoPhillips Runs Every PO Through a Supplier Portal

ConocoPhillips's supplier relations page, as it read on October 17, 2026, is about as plain as procurement gets: every purchase order comes through its GEP portal, payment tracking runs through a Taulia supplier portal, and the company warns that it won't issue purchase orders by email. If your old habit was waiting for a buyer to email you a PO after a good lunch, that lane is closed at that operator.

The portal handles the transaction once a supplier is set up. Getting set up is its own gate, and we walk through each operator's version in how to get on an operator's approved vendor list.

Everything upstream of the PO stays human. Somebody writes the spec. Somebody decides which suppliers make the shortlist, and whether a new connection is worth a trial on the next pad. Those people are mostly engineers and supply chain staff, and by the time a PO shows up in the portal, they've already made their choice.

Mill-Direct in the Permian: What Tenaris's Rig Direct Changed

In December 2016, Tenaris opened a $36 million service center in Midland for OCTG storage, inspection, rig preparation, and delivery. In 2016, its Rig Direct program accounted for about 90% of its Permian Basin OCTG sales. In its annual report for fiscal 2025, Tenaris says it has expanded the scope and deployment of Rig Direct across North America, adding digital solutions and deeper supply chain integration.

(I came up in Vallourec's Houston marketing team, so weigh my read on pipe makers with that in mind.)

For a distributor rep, the change is plain. When the mill itself stores, inspects, preps, and delivers the pipe, much of that order may never cross your desk. The decision behind it still sits with people. Somebody at the operator chose that program, and somebody still has to choose everything around the pipe that the program doesn't cover. The rep who is known for explaining that work, before anybody asks for a quote, keeps a place in the conversation whichever way the pipe ships. For the wider basin, see OCTG and PVF sales in the Permian Basin, and everything we've written for supply reps sits on our equipment and supply reps page.

What the Supply Market Shows: A Shift Toward Direct Sales

The USITC's OCTG case record, published in May 2026, tracks how pipe reached buyers from 2023 to 2025. US mills sold OCTG almost equally to distributors and to end users, and their direct sales to end users grew over that stretch. Imports from countries outside the case went from mostly through distributors in 2023 to mostly direct to end users in 2025. Imports from the three countries in the case (Austria, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates) were still sold nearly all through distributors.

On the distributor side, DNOW's 10-K for fiscal 2025, filed February 26, 2026, describes two e-commerce platforms, DigitalNOW and MRCGO. It calls its digital transformation strategy a key component of operational excellence and lists expanding digital interaction with customers among its business strategies, without saying what share of sales runs through the platforms.

So more OCTG is moving direct, and one large distributor is writing digital ordering into its plans. Neither of those tells you how many reps the business will need. My read is that the part of the order that moves to a screen first is the repeat order, where the buyer already knows exactly what he wants. Plan your week around the other part. If all this has you weighing a move between distributors, our guide on keeping your expertise under your own name covers what travels with you.

Where a Rep Still Earns the Sale: Before the Shortlist Is Set

6sense's 2025 B2B Buyer Experience Report found that 94% of buying groups rank their shortlist before they engage sellers, and 77% of buyers said their first vendor conversation was with the vendor that eventually won. The 2025 Edelman and LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report adds that 71% of hidden buyers, such as the people in finance, legal, compliance, and procurement, say they have relatively little or no interaction with sales.

For a supply rep, that settles where the hours go. The ranking happens before you're in the room, and some of the people with a say on the order may never take your call. So be the rep whose explanations an engineer has already read while he's still trying to put a problem into words. In practice that means writing, under your own name, about the things you explain on every call:

  • The questions engineers bring you before they can name a part, and how you work through them.
  • What changed in where pipe comes from and how it ships, with the dates attached.
  • A problem job you helped solve, told plainly, with the customer's name left out.
  • What it takes to get a product qualified, from the vendor's side of the table. Our guide to approved manufacturer lists goes deeper on that one.

The Warm Walk-In™ turns what you already explain by text and from the truck into posts in your voice on your own profile, with your yes on every one, so an engineer can read you before the shortlist is set. Whether a buyer searches LinkedIn or asks an AI tool for names, that written record is what there is to find, and we cover the AI side in will AI change the way oil and gas buyers find vendors. Service reps asking the same question will find their version in oilfield sales skills AI can't replace.

The Engineers Following One Permian Founder

We post for the Permian founder we work with, in his voice and with his yes on every post, and the most common job title among his followers is drilling engineer: the people still choosing long before any order reaches a portal. Between September 15, 2025 and October 19, 2026, his posts reached 104,386 people. Read the full story.

Where the Catalog Genuinely Wins

Honestly, for MRO pulls under a blanket PO, a catalog really is faster than a rep, and it should be. Nobody needs a phone call to reorder the same gaskets and fittings they bought last month. If you're fighting a portal for those orders, you're spending your best hours where you add the least. Let the screen have them, and put your effort where an engineer is still choosing: a new well design, a problem job, a source change, or a product that needs qualifying.
