By Amanda Leon, founder of OilMoney.io. Houston-raised, came up in the Houston marketing team of Vallourec, and has run Unrth, a brand and growth studio for oil and gas and industrial companies, since 2017, with her boots on client locations in Midland and Odessa. Last reviewed October 20, 2026.

Vallourec humbled me. I walked into its Houston marketing team having studied neuroscience and international relations, and I didn't know much of anything about pipe. I came up there, at the French maker of VAM premium connections, pulling apart international drilling marketing data and learning about fracking and drilling and the different heads on drill bits. It reminded me I'm always going to be a student of life, and that it's more important to listen and learn than to speak.

Put your student hat on when a drilling engineer asks you the same casing grade and connection question again, by text, while you're in the truck. Listen first, then answer it once, dated and under your own name, so the next person who asks gets your best answer, not your tired one. This page is for working PVF and OCTG sales reps, and for the valve, wellhead, and pump reps calling on the same engineers and branch counters.

Who Is Running Rigs and Buying Pipe

For a pipe rep, the operator list matters more than the total, because the operator's engineers write the casing program. As of April 10, 2026, Enverus ranked ExxonMobil first among Permian operators with 34.0 rigs, then Occidental at 20.0, Diamondback at 15.8, and ConocoPhillips at 14.2, counting the whole Permian, as PBOG Magazine reported. Baker Hughes put the basin at 272 rigs in the week ending October 16, 2026.

What Casing Will Cost and the Tariff Picture

Diamondback's August 3, 2026 stockholder letter said it had seen no significant service cost inflation outside fuel and fuel-adjacent costs, but it expects inflation on fixed costs such as casing through the rest of 2026 and into 2027.

On imports, two dates matter. The Section 232 tariff on imported steel and derivative steel articles rose from 25 percent to 50 percent effective June 4, 2025, under a proclamation dated June 3, 2025. Then on April 2, 2026, US OCTG producers filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions against OCTG from Austria, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates, Steel Market Update reported.

Engineers and buyers keep asking what casing will cost next year. That is the answer to write down first, with its date on it, so you can send a link instead of typing it again from the truck. Our Section 232 and OCTG guide walks through it.

How Orders Actually Get Placed

My mom has worked in oil and gas for more than 30 years, in procurement. She's the one who got me my first job at Vallourec, and a lot of what she taught me still holds, starting with treating everyone with respect. On a supply deal, that means the buyer's whole team: the category manager, the person who sets you up in the portal, and the counter hand, not only the engineer who writes the spec. They remember who was decent to them.

The paperwork differs by operator. ConocoPhillips issues every purchase order through its GEP portal, and Ovintiv has its suppliers register in OpenInvoice; how to get on an operator's approved vendor list lays out those gates in full.

On price, Argus says supply chain and category managers at oil and gas companies use its OCTG price assessments when negotiating contracts for program purchases, so know where the index sits before you quote. B-P Supply's September 2026 posting for a business development rep in Monahans writes access to engineers and supply chain managers into the job itself; more on that in clearing the vendor gate with supply chain.

When the Price Book Decides

Some orders no profile will win. On commodity pipe and PVF bought under a supply agreement or a blanket PO, the price book and the supply agreement decide the order, and a stronger profile will not beat a lower number on a bid sheet. If that is most of your book, put your time into price and terms.

A name earns its keep earlier, on the spec question asked before a program is set. When a bid is open to more than price, see winning an RFP without being the cheapest bid. If you only want posts written, compare OilMoney with a LinkedIn ghostwriter.

Five Guides for Supply Reps

Reps change distributors, and the logo on the truck door changes with them. OCTG and PVF Sales in the Permian: Keep Your Name When the Logo Changes is about the part that stays with you, and the rest of the basin is in the Permian Basin field guides. Then the five for your job:

Two short answers sit beside them: what to send when a buyer says "send me some information", and explaining a complex oilfield service so it lands the first time.

The Warm Walk-In™ in Four Moves

For a supply rep, the first move is where the spec answers you give every week get written down once. The Warm Walk-In™ runs like this:

  1. Capture. One story dump a quarter, typed or spoken from the truck.
  2. Rig up. Positioning, voice, profile, one signature offer. Four to six weeks. Yours forever.
  3. Run the rotation. Posts in your voice on a fixed calendar, three to five a week, never more than one a day. Your name in the right conversations. A fresh lead magnet every quarter.
  4. Read the quarter. A plain-English video review every three months. Saves, messages, meetings. Not likes.

A Founder in the Top 1%

For a supply rep, the number I'd sit with in this founder's story is the Social Selling Index rank, because he is in the field whenever he isn't at a podium in a suit.

A fourth-generation Permian service-company founder who hated marketing. His board nearly killed the project over ROI. We spent June to October 2025 building his name, then started posting for him, in his voice, with his yes on every post.

From Sep 15, 2025 to Oct 19, 2026: 270,955 impressions, 104,386 people reached, and followers up from 1,974 to 4,232, with 61% of them working in oil and gas. LinkedIn's Social Selling Index ranks him in the top 1% of sales professionals in oil and gas.

No name, by policy. It's his name, not ours. Read the full story.
