The house account stays with your company, because the company owns it. The agreement behind it goes into the buyer's vendor review, and your name and your standing with the people on that account go wherever you go. One limit: when the acquirer runs a central vendor review, it can consolidate, renegotiate, or replace overlapping vendors (a law firm's July 2026 view), and a well-known name may not change that outcome.
What a known name does change is who still picks up. Once our clients' LinkedIn presence grew, the feedback they pass on to me ran the same across the board. Their customers have bought into the story. They want to see them win, and they're down for the ride. Those same customers say our clients keep them up to date on everything, including who's headed to their part of the world. That part of the account lives in the heads of the engineers and company men on the customer's side, under your name, and it rides along when the logo on their gate changes. Build it before a deal makes you need it.
What a House Account Means in Oilfield Sales
A house account is one your company owns outright and often pays you no commission on. An oilfield salesman we interviewed described them as "house accounts you don't make commission on." The company gets the revenue line, and you get the relationships. The day an operator buys that customer, the company fights for the revenue line, and the relationships are yours to keep or lose. Write down who on the operator's side calls you, by name and title, and what they call about. That list is the only version of the account you'll keep.
What Changes After an Operator Deal Closes
The closing date starts a review you won't be in. Foley and Lardner wrote in July 2026 that acquirers typically go through the oilfield service agreements they inherit, then consolidate, renegotiate, or replace the vendors that overlap. Whether the MSA can be assigned is in our guide on your MSA when your customer gets acquired. On your side, purchase orders may come from a new portal, and the person who signed your last ticket may now report to someone who has never heard of you. Keep working the account. Ask your contact who is reviewing vendors and what he needs from you to make the case for keeping you. He may be fighting for you in a room you'll never see, so hand him something to hold up.
Recent Permian Deals and When They Closed
Each closing date below started a vendor review somewhere.
ExxonMobil closed its purchase of Pioneer Natural Resources on May 3, 2024, with more than 1.4 million net acres across the Delaware and Midland basins at close.
Devon and Coterra completed their all-stock merger on May 7, 2026, and the combined company runs as Devon Energy out of Houston.
SLB completed its $7.8 billion acquisition of ChampionX on July 16, 2025, a service-company deal: your competition is consolidating too.
When the Customer List Shrinks
The worst case has a name and a date. Nitro Fluids, a Texas oilfield services firm, filed for bankruptcy in May 2024 after Permian Resources acquired its top customer, Earthstone Energy; as Reuters reported in July 2024, its average monthly revenue went from $1.2 million in 2023 to under $100,000 by March 2024 (older figures). For a rep, the same deal turns a three-account book into two. Being known at the company that did the buying, before the deal closes, is cover a better pitch can't give you. Have a second and a third name at every customer, and see oilfield service sales in the Permian Basin for the slow years and the busy ones.
Who Decides at the New Owner
After a deal, the seat that decides on you may have moved.
ConocoPhillips issues every purchase order through its GEP portal and won't issue one by email, per its supplier site in October 2026; more gates in how to get on an operator's approved vendor list.
Baytex's drilling superintendent posting from September 2026 has the role overseeing drilling contractors, service providers, and third-party vendors so the work gets done safely, and says nothing about picking them.
Forrester's 2025 Buyers' Journey Survey counted an average of 13 people inside the buying company and nine outside it in a purchase decision; see how to sell to a whole buying committee.
The week a deal closes, ask where purchase orders come from now and who your crew answers to on location. Your company man will know before anybody sends you a memo.
Your Name, Your Reputation, and What Your Agreement Says
6sense's 2025 B2B Buyer Experience Report found 75% of buyers personally know sellers at the vendors they evaluate. The 2025 Edelman and LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report found 73% of target decision-makers and 71% of hidden decision-makers agree thought leadership shows a vendor's potential value better than conventional marketing or sales materials; more in personal brand versus company brand. An acquisition pulls your customer into market on the buyer's schedule, and the buyer's people decide with the names they already know.
Your reputation is the one asset no review can reassign, as long as it's built under your name: a profile that says what you know, posts that answer the questions the new engineer will ask anyway, and a record a stranger can read in five minutes. The Warm Walk-In™ builds that for a rep whose customer just changed hands: positioning, voice, and a steady run of posts you approve, aimed at the people moving onto the account.
If you change companies yourself, what you can carry comes down to what you signed; our guide on whether your customers will follow you to a new company covers who owns what, and your lawyer covers the rest.
A Permian Founder in His Industry's Top 1%
The founder we work with, a fourth-generation oilfield man who built a service company in the Permian and was allergic to fake branding, ranks in the top 1% of sales professionals in oil and gas on LinkedIn's Social Selling Index. LinkedIn attaches that standing to him, not to his company: it goes where he goes. Read the full story.
