By Amanda Leon, founder of OilMoney.io. Houston-raised, came up in the Houston marketing team of Vallourec, and has run Unrth, a brand and growth studio for oil and gas and industrial companies, since 2017, with her boots on client locations in Midland and Odessa. Last reviewed October 20, 2026.
You walked the engineer through it, he liked what he heard, and then he said the line every rep knows: let me run it by the team. Now your deal sits with people you may never meet.
Sell each seat on its own terms, and give one person inside a reason and a way to carry you to the rest. A buying committee is everyone with a say in whether you get the work, and it's bigger than it looks: across B2B, Forrester's 2025 Buyers' Journey Survey found the average purchase decision pulls in 13 people from inside the buying company and nine from outside it. Map the seats, learn what each one needs, get your vendor file clean before anyone asks, and find one person inside who wants you to win.
Who Sits on an Operator's Committee, Title by Title
- The company man. The operator's representative on location, answering for safety and efficiency out there. See selling to the company man.
- The drilling superintendent. Penn State's petroleum engineering course describes him running drilling operations, usually from a field office over several wells, with the rig-site company man reporting to him. Baytex's posting for the job, which closed September 18, 2026, has him overseeing contractors, service providers, and vendors once they're hired; it doesn't give him the say on picking them. See selling to a drilling superintendent.
- The drilling engineer. He designs the well and writes the AFE, and EOG's Midland posting also has him evaluating vendor performance. See what a drilling engineer does.
- The completions engineer. In Oxy's Midland posting from June 2026, he's the on-site company representative for completions, and he reviews and approves invoices. See selling to a completion engineer.
- The production engineer. A Permian Resources posting from June 2026, based in Midland, has him designing and troubleshooting artificial lift and writing AFEs for workovers. See selling to a production engineer.
- The water resources engineer. Another Permian Resources posting, from September 2026, has him reconciling run tickets against water purchase statements, tracking costs and budgets, and working with third-party vendors. See selling to oil and gas water management.
- Procurement and supply chain. The desk that sets you up as a vendor and lines your bid up against everyone else's. See getting known by supply chain.
The People You Never Meet: Supply Chain and Procurement
In the 2025 Edelman and LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report, 71% of hidden buyers (think finance, legal, compliance, and procurement) said they have relatively little or no interaction with sales, and we dig into that report in personal brand vs company brand. Make their part easy, starting with paperwork. Every operator runs its own supplier gate, from safety grades to the portal a purchase order comes through, and three operators' rules are spelled out in how to get on an operator's approved vendor list.
I'll be straight with you: when the deal has to clear procurement, a clean prequalification file and a sharp commercial proposal do more than any post. Keep the file current, know your grade, and write the proposal so a stranger can compare it. For bids, see winning an oil and gas RFP without being the cheapest bid.
What 'Run It by the Team' Really Means
Usually the person across the table can't say yes alone. Sometimes that's process. Sometimes the team disagrees: LinkedIn cites a May 2025 Gartner sales survey, across B2B, in which nearly three in four buying groups reported unhealthy conflict before they reached a decision.
Either way, don't settle for "let me know." Find out:
- Who's on the team, by title, and what each will want to see.
- Whose AFE or budget the cost lands in. In the postings above, engineers write AFEs, so that may be someone you haven't met.
- When the team meets, so your follow-up lands after it.
Finding a Champion and Keeping Them Selling for You
A champion is the person inside who wants your service and will carry it to the seats you can't reach. Look for someone whose problem you fix and who already sits between the field and the paperwork, like the completions engineer in Oxy's posting, who approves invoices.
Everyone knows everyone in the Permian, which makes mistakes public. Good news travels the same roads: in a place that tight and talkative, one happy client tells five people. The committee talks the same way, in the meeting and after it, so treat your champion like the happy client whose word reaches every other seat.
- Don't go around them. Ask them for the supply chain introduction.
- Arm them for the questions they'll get, like cost and what changes on location.
- Tell them your vendor setup status, so they don't hit a wall in the portal.
- Close the loop. After every meeting they carry for you, ask what came back.
The Permian founder we work with had a board that nearly killed our project over ROI, in a room I never sat in. That's how most buying committees work. The decision gets made where you aren't, so the person inside needs your numbers in hand before the meeting starts.
If your champion goes quiet, see what to do when a deal goes quiet.
Give Your Champion Something to Forward
Your champion will retell your pitch in a meeting you aren't in. Give them one page: the problem on their wells, what you do about it, how it's priced, your vendor status there, and the next step. If they've asked you to send some information, that page is your answer.
Then make sure what the other seats find when they look you up says the same thing. That's what The Warm Walk-In™ builds: what you know, in public and in your voice, with your yes on every post, so the people you never meet can size you up before the meeting. Of the people who follow the Permian founder we work with, 61% work in oil and gas, and the most common job title among them is drilling engineer, one of the seats on this list. Read the full story.
For the long game in the basin, see oilfield service sales in the Permian, and for the rest of a rep's week, our page for oilfield service reps.
What the Other Seats Find
Your champion can only forward what's already out there.
Send us your LinkedIn. We'll send back the Bison Walk-Around: five minutes of plain English on what's costing you callbacks and what we'd build. No call. No invoice. We give first.
