Most oilfield sales reps get a base salary plus a commission or bonus, and many get a truck or a vehicle allowance on top. Few employers say how much up front: of 93 live sales postings we read in November 2026, 14 showed pay, 35 mentioned commission or bonus, and 10 mentioned a vehicle. Among the 14, the low end of the range had a median of about $100,000. Federal data puts service sales reps in Midland at an average of $89,490.
What Postings Show
These come from our postings report. They're examples, not a survey, and some ranges may include more than base:
Creedence Energy Services, account manager, Midland: $95,000 to $110,000, plus annual bonuses, a company vehicle, and FRs and PPE provided.
Winn-Marion Companies, division sales and business development manager, Midland: $100,000 to $130,000 base, with expected base plus bonus listed at $200,000 to $350,000 or more, and a car allowance.
Geosynthetics territory role through a recruiter, Odessa: $85,000 to $100,000 plus uncapped commission, with on-target earnings of $125,000 or more.
Account manager through a recruiter, Williston: $120,000 to $130,000 base, with higher on-target earnings.
Petroleum account manager through a recruiter, Tulsa: $100,000 to $140,000, plus quarterly and annual bonuses and a company vehicle.
NOV, regional sales manager, Denver: $80,000 to $120,000 base.
United Pipeline Systems, technical sales manager, Houston: $90,000 to $130,000.
Innospec, account manager, Williston: $115,000.
Aggreko's Odessa posting doesn't list a number, but it spells out the shape: a competitive base, an uncapped commission plan, and a company vehicle. On X, one reply about Permian tool sales put it at about $150,000 base plus bonus, benefits, and a truck or allowance for someone with 15 years of experience. That's one person's word, so treat it as a data point. We cover it in what Oil Twitter says about oilfield sales.
What Federal Data Shows
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes wages by metro area. These are May 2025 figures, listed as average and then median. They cover all industries, not only oil and gas.
Sales reps of services (the closest fit for many service company reps):
Midland: $89,490 and $80,460.
Odessa: $80,800 and $73,350.
Houston: $74,210 and $63,090.
Oklahoma City: $65,170 and $55,190.
United States: $82,430 and $69,990.
Wholesale and manufacturing reps, non-technical products (often supply and PVF):
Midland: $93,590 and $76,930.
Odessa: $81,340 and $65,750.
Houston: $82,660 and $73,030.
Oklahoma City: $77,570 and $63,920.
United States: $82,530 and $72,080.
Wholesale and manufacturing reps, technical products:
Odessa: $121,720 and $99,340. BLS flags more uncertainty around this small group.
Houston: $114,360 and $100,980.
Oklahoma City: $82,360 and $71,120.
United States: $119,730 and $104,920.
Midland runs above the national average in both of the first two groups. What a technical sales representative does adds sales engineers, who earn more.
Read these with care. BLS counts base pay, commissions, incentive pay, and production bonuses. It leaves out perks, overtime, and non-production bonuses, so a company truck isn't in these numbers. It also doesn't cover owners or the self-employed. And the big gap between average and median in some of these groups tells you a few high earners pull up the average.
Why the Postings and the Federal Numbers Differ
Postings that show pay lean toward experienced roles and recruiters filling harder jobs, and they're a small slice. The federal numbers include every rep in a metro area and every industry, from a new hire selling office supplies on up. The truth for your job sits somewhere between them, and it moves with the oil price. When we read what executives told the Dallas Fed, service companies kept coming back to rising costs and customers delaying work.
What to Ask Before You Sign
Base: What is it, and when was it last reviewed for this territory?
Commission: What's the plan, in writing? Is it on revenue or margin? Is there a cap?
Timing: Is it paid when you invoice or when the customer pays? In a slow-pay stretch, that difference is real money.
Bonus: Is it tied to you, your team, or the company? Who decides?
Truck: Company vehicle or allowance? Who pays for fuel and insurance, and can you use it personally?
Expenses: Is there a company card? What gets approved, and how fast do you get reimbursed?
Territory: Can it be changed after you've built it? Do you keep accounts you opened?
On your way out: What happens to earned commission when you leave, and what did you sign? Read Texas non-compete law first.
Commission Follows Your Name
Commission pays you for who calls you back. A rep whose name is known before the call-out has a shorter road to that check, and keeps that name when the plan changes. That's the case for The Warm Walk-In™, and for owning your profile, your posts, and your voice wherever you work.
