OilMoney vs Doing LinkedIn Yourself: The Hours, the Tools, and the Bill

By Amanda Leon, founder of OilMoney.io. Houston-raised, came up in the Houston marketing team of Vallourec, and has run Unrth, a brand and growth studio for oil and gas and industrial companies, since 2017, with her boots on client locations in Midland and Odessa. Last reviewed October 20, 2026.

The truck's finally parked for the night, and the post you meant to write is still a blank box on your phone. You know the stories. You just ran out of day before you ran out of things to say.

Posting on LinkedIn is free, and nobody sounds more like you than you do. If you like writing and can protect the hours, keep doing it yourself, and if you want a tool, Taplio's pricing page lists plans from $39 to $199 a month as of July 22, 2026. Paying OilMoney makes sense when your posts keep losing to the drive home and you'd rather approve a post than write one.

What Doing It Yourself Costs: AI Post Generators and Writing Tools

Search for a LinkedIn post writer and you'll run into a lot of AI post generators: you type in a topic and they hand back a draft. The catch is how LinkedIn treats posts that read that way. LinkedIn's Laura Lorenzetti wrote in May 2026 that posts which look AI-generated and have no clear viewpoint are less likely to travel beyond the poster's immediate network. A generator can hand you sentences. The viewpoint has to come from somebody who has stood on the location, and that's you.

If you'd rather use a tool built for doing it yourself, Taplio, a LinkedIn writing and scheduling tool, lists plans at $39, $69, and $199 a month, billed monthly, on its pricing page as of July 22, 2026. Six months at those prices comes to $234 to $1,194 by our math, and posting itself costs nothing.

Keep one more line item separate: Sales Navigator, LinkedIn's prospecting tool, which you don't need to post. LinkedIn lists Sales Navigator Core at about $119.99 a month or $1,079.88 a year, and Advanced at about $159.99 or $1,799.88, as estimates on October 17, 2026. If you buy it, buy it for prospecting, and keep it out of the writing budget.

The Hours Are the Real Bill

The tool bill is small. The hours are the real cost. Orbit Media's 2026 survey of 1,042 content marketers found the average blog post takes 3 hours 20 minutes to write, and only 13.9 percent reported strong results. That's professionals writing blog posts, a different job from yours, but the direction carries over: writing well takes real time even for people paid to do it.

Then there's the time it takes to learn LinkedIn itself. On our crew, Ashi carries that load. She's our LinkedIn Growth and Authority Advisor: she does the coursework, keeps up with what's working now, and follows each algorithm change as LinkedIn rolls it out, so our clients stay on the cutting edge. Do it yourself, and that study time comes out of your own week, on top of the writing, every time LinkedIn moves the goalposts.

How Much Ground You Cover

Those hours have to come out of a week spent on the road. Texas Railroad Commission Oil and Gas District 8 alone covers 20 counties, including Andrews, Crane, Ector, Glasscock, Howard, Martin, Midland, Mitchell, and Sterling on the Midland side, plus Loving, Reeves, Ward, Winkler, Pecos, and Culberson to the west.

Drilling Tools International's listing for a Field Sales/Technical Sales role in Midland gives you the shape of the job: 5 or more years of experience, field sales calling on rigs in the Permian as desired expertise, extensive local travel within the Permian Basin, and a company vehicle. That's a job lived from the driver's seat.

What Only You Can Write From the Field

This is where doing it yourself has a real edge, and where anyone you pay to write has to earn the money. In an October 2026 preview based on more than 5,000 creators and more than 120,000 posts, Richard van der Blom reported that, compared to March, expert posts fell to a reach of 6,500 (down 23%) and 1.18% engagement (down 22%), while personal stories rose 14% to a median reach of 16,000. LinkedIn's Tim Jurka wrote in March 2026 that the feed will show less generic, repetitive thought leadership and more actionable insights and conversations from industry experts.

A personal story that carries real know-how fits both. Your best material is personal and expert at once, because it happened to you: the tool that came back from a run looking wrong, and what you found; the company man who called you instead of the shop down the road, and why. Nobody writes those without you, us included, and none of it guarantees reach on any single post.

With The Warm Walk-In™, the stories still come from you, through one story dump a quarter, typed or spoken from the truck. We do the writing. Nothing goes up on your profile without your yes, and the voice guide, the profile, the posts, and your own lived experience stay yours.

Where Doing It Yourself Wins

Doing it yourself wins on cost and on voice. Posting is free, nobody sounds more like you than you, and if you want help with the mechanics, Taplio listed $39 to $199 a month in July 2026. If you like writing and can protect the hours, keep doing it yourself.

Commenting is one part you can always do yourself, and people are spending more time there. LinkedIn's Daniel Shapero said at Microsoft's FY26 Q4 results in July 2026 that content consumption on LinkedIn was up 10% year on year and time spent on comments was up 18%. A sharp comment under a buyer's post, in your own words, is something you can write once you're parked between stops.

What Consistency Is Worth

Where doing it yourself gets hard is rhythm. Posts that go out on the nights you have something left stop on the weeks you don't. LinkedIn tells company pages that posting weekly brings a 2x lift in engagement with their content; that's written for pages, but it's a fair hint for a personal profile. The typical post is also pulling a little less than it used to: Buffer's 2026 engagement study, which counts only posts published through Buffer, found LinkedIn's median engagement rate fell about 5% from 2024 to 2025, from roughly 6.4% to 6.1%.

Rhythm is what The Rotation is built for: a fixed calendar, three to five posts a week and never more than one a day, so the writing doesn't wait on a free night.

What The Rig-Up and The Rotation Cost

Our bill, so you can set it beside yours. You'd start with The Rig-Up, a one-time $8,500 for one seat that gets you your positioning, a voice guide, a rebuilt LinkedIn profile, and one signature offer. The Rotation comes next at $2,450 a month with a six-month minimum, and nobody buys it alone. A truck stuck in the mud needs traction before it moves, and The Rig-Up is the traction.

Your minimum first commitment for one seat is $23,200, The Rig-Up plus six months of The Rotation. Set that next to six months of a DIY tool plus your own hours, and doing it yourself is far cheaper in dollars. You should hear that from us first. What the $23,200 buys is that you stop writing posts: we write them in your voice on a fixed calendar, and you approve each one. It's a minimum first commitment, not a yearly price.

When to Keep Doing It Yourself

Keep doing it yourself if these sound like you:

  • You like writing, and a post feels like a break after the drive.
  • You can block the same time every week and keep it, even in a busy month.
  • You have opinions you'll put your name on, and the field stories to back them up.
  • You'd rather keep the money this year and build at your own pace.

If you're sticking with it, start with what to post on LinkedIn as an oilfield sales rep and freeing up selling time. If you want a writer but aren't sure it should be us, see OilMoney vs a LinkedIn ghostwriter. The time side is in LinkedIn for oilfield sales reps who would rather be home, what we build for reps is on our page for oilfield service sales reps, and owners weighing a hire can see the in-house comparison.

He Started With a Dormant Profile

The founder in our proof story, fourth generation in the oilfield with his own service company in the Permian, had a dormant LinkedIn profile before we started. We wrote in his voice with his yes on each post, and between Sep 15, 2025 and Oct 19, 2026 his followers went from 1,974 to 4,232. Read the full story.
